PM Narendra Modi inaugurates newly constructed flats for Members of Parliament in New Delhi.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addresses a gathering during the inauguration of newly constructed flats for Members of Parliament in New Delhi :

Today, I had the opportunity to inaugurate this residential complex for my colleagues in Parliament. I extend my congratulations to all Members of Parliament. I also commend all the engineers and worker friends involved in the construction of these flats, whose hard work made this project possible.

The names of these 4 towers are also very beautiful. Krishna, Godavari, Kosi, Hooghly, four great rivers of India, which give life to millions of people. Now, inspired by them, a new stream of joy will flow in the lives of our public representatives.

In this multi-storey building, more than 180 Members of Parliament will be able to reside together. These new residences also have an important economic aspect. During the inauguration of Kartavya Bhavan, I had mentioned that several ministries operating from rented buildings incurred an annual rent of nearly ₹1,500 crore. It was a sheer waste of the nation’s money. Similarly, the lack of adequate housing for Members of Parliament was also leading to increased government expenditure.

Our MP colleagues will move into new residences, and I recently had the opportunity to see a sample flat of one. I have also had the chance to see the old MP residences. The old residences were often in a state of disrepair, and MPs had to face various troubles frequently. After moving into the new residences, they will be free from those issues. When our MP colleagues are free from their own problems, they will be able to devote their time and energy more effectively to resolving the public’s issues.

Here, Members of Parliament from different states and regions of the country will live together. Your presence here will become a symbol of Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat. Therefore, if festivals from every state are collectively celebrated in this complex from time to time, it will add a special charm and vibrancy to the atmosphere.

Let sustainability and cleanliness become the hallmark of this building; this should be our collective commitment. Not only the MPs’ residences but the entire complex would be so much better if it remains clean and pristine always.
