What is Mamata Banerjee so scared of?

Just ahead of the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, Mamata Banerjee has rolled out a scheme called “Amader Para, Amader Samadhan”, which she claims is the first-of-its-kind in the country.

Here’s what it really is: a preemptive cover-up and a desperate move to influence voters using public money.

₹10 lakh allocated to each of the 80,000 booths — booth, mind you, is not an administrative unit

₹8,000 crore to be supposedly spent under the garb of “development”

This is nothing but institutional bribery.

Earlier, parties used to hand out cash under the table. Now, Mamata’s government is doing it with taxpayer money—officially.
All of this comes on top of other freebie schemes. Where is the money? No one knows!

Clearly, Mamata Banerjee is nervous about what the ECI’s Special Revision might uncover — ghost voters, bogus rolls, and inflated mandates?

If everything is clean, why resort to this?

While she showers taxpayer money on political schemes and promises to dole out ₹10 lakh per booth in the name of development, she tells the poor to “eat whatever is at home and survive.”
